Immigration detainees begin hunger striking to protest continued lockup during Covid-19
As Covid-19 causes court closures and processing delays across our overtaxed immigration system, many detainees are stuck in detention facilities around the country. Fearing the spread of coronavirus, detainees in detention centers in at least three states have launched hunger strikes to protest their continued confinement, according to the Providence Journal, The Hill, and Democracy Now! “I think the hunger strike is coming from being desperate,” Rev. Annie Gonzalez Millaken told the Providence Journal of her conversations with detainees. “They are kind of stuck in limbo.”
