National Guard helps California food banks during Covid-19 lockdown

Last week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom deployed the state’s National Guard to help food banks serve residents facing food shortages during the pandemic. In the face of a volunteer shortage, the deployment will provide aid to any counties in the state requesting assistance with their food bank programs. Besides assisting with basic food bank duties, Newsom said that the state wanted to make sure “food delivery is happening appropriately” and articulated concerns about the hoarding of groceries and other essentials.
