We spent $486 billion on takeout

U.S. diners spent $486 billion on takeout last year, according to a report from Paytronix, which is definitely not a digital ordering company and certainly doesn’t have skin in the game, The Spoon reported. (Just kidding, the company sells customer loyalty programs to restaurants and collaborated with the trade publication PYMTS for the research.) Still, it’s a big number for a year when Americans spent more money on food prepared at home than food eaten in restaurants, a reversal from previous years. According to a new estimate from the Census Bureau, January 2021 restaurant and bar sales were up 6.9 percent from December 2020, but down 16.6 percent from the same month last year.
