Dutch company acquires Grubhub for $7.3 billion
Grubhub announced last week it was acquired by Amsterdam-based delivery business Just Eat Takeaway.com in a $7.3 billion deal, the Associated Press reports. The Dutch company beat out Uber, which hoped to combine Grubhub’s business with Uber Eats, for the acquisition. Grubhub continues to face challenges from local governments as it expands its business during the Covid-19 pandemic: New York City and San Francisco have both implemented caps on the company’s commission fees, and restaurant owners forced to close their dining rooms complain the company’s cut is too high. The deal is expected to close in early 2021.
