Navajo Nation has the highest known rate of Covid-19 due to lack of water access

When public health officials advise you to wash your hands and stay home, who does that leave out? The Navajo Nation has the highest known rate of Covid-19 in the country, including New York City. That’s largely because they lack sufficient resources and infrastructure, according to Outside magazine. By May 24, there were 4,658 reported cases and 165 deaths across a population of 172,000. More than a third of the Navajo Nation doesn’t have access to running water, a result not just from the pandemic but a long history of denying the tribe’s legal right to water access.
