“The only conversation they have in a day is with me”

Volunteers from Riseboro and CityMeals in NYC are on a mission to deliver meals to one of the most vulnerable populations amid the coronavirus pandemic: the elderly. The city’s senior centers have been closed down since March to ensure the safety of its attendees, according to Civil Eats—stripping thousands of New York’s older residents of much needed community, daily interaction, and even food security, as many are unable to cook for themselves. Health concerns and isolation from friends and family make for a particularly challenging atmosphere. For many, the occasional visit from these volunteers provides them not only with a meal but the only conversation they’ll have for the day—a reminder of a community that still cares for them.
