World’s largest cell-based meat prototype looks like an ottoman

A Spanish startup has developed the biggest cell-based meat prototype in the world (bigger than meatballs and nuggets and patties), Food Navigator-USA reports. That’s not necessarily a good thing: The product looks, as one Counter staffer put it, “like an ottoman,” a dark red, squishy-looking cube with wicker-like hatching patterns across the top. Measuring about 1.4 cubic inches, the meat is grown on a “scaffold” of plant-based protein. Despite its strange appearance, startup Novameat is convinced this is the protein of the future. Here’s hoping the next prototype looks like an armchair.
