Electric stovetops are the future, and they cook food just fine
Electric stovetops don’t deserve their bad reputation, The Washington Post’s Becky Krystal argues. Sure, older models might take a little longer to heat up and cool down, but with two-thirds of Americans cooking on electric stoves, it’s clear people are getting along just fine. Indeed, as Mother Jones reported earlier this summer, some of our love for gas cooking may be attributed to advertising campaigns by the fossil fuel industry, eager to find another line into American homes. (That phrase “cooking with gas”? That was a 1930s ad campaign, popularized after a gas industry executive made sure Disney used it in cartoons.) In short: Electric is a perfectly good way to cook food. It’s high time we boogie woogie with it.
