Pet food companies ramp up development of insect-based products

Insect-based pet food is inching closer and closer to reality, as companies race to develop products that appeal to eco-conscious shoppers. It’s no secret that the livestock industry is associated with high carbon emissions. To that end, start-ups and well-established pet food manufacturers alike are trying to formulate alternatives made from bug protein sources, such as fly and mealworm larvae. In fact, manufacturers may soon get the Food and Drug Administration’s green light to use dried black soldier fly larvae in commercial products: CNBC reports that the ingredient is moving through the regulatory approval pipeline as we speak. Seems like insect-based pet food will soon be all the buzz.
