The official cocktail of the Black Panther Party was a recipe for change
The Black Panther Party, known for their political prowess and radical organizing in the ’60s and ’70s, had a signature cocktail that went by several names throughout the organization. Panther Piss, Bitter Dog, or Bitter Mothafucka consisted of a port red wine and citrus, usually lemon or grapefruit juice. The cocktail was often passed around in a shared bottle wherever the party would congregate to organize community food and health programs or to work on the Panther’s newspaper. Party leader Huey P. Newton ran an office out of a soul food restaurant-bar in North Oakland called Bosn’s Locker where members would gather over food and drink, a central way they spread their ideologies to the larger Black community. Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Robert “Li’l Bobby” James Hutton was murdered there in a shoot-out by Oakland police. Members of the party raised a glass of his favorite drink in his memory, Food & Wine writes.
