Nestle releases “Vuna,” a plant-based tuna alternative

Nestlé is currently introducing a plant-based tuna alternative in Switzerland ahead of a worldwide launch, citing higher demand for its meat-free products during the first half of 2020. The refrigerated, glass-jarred Sensational Vuna is Nestlé’s first foray into vegan seafood offerings and is made of pea protein. Nestlé already sells vegetarian burgers, sausages, and chicken nuggets under the Garden Gourmet line, and Nestlé USA acquired the Sweet Earth brand in 2017. According to Reuters, sales of the company’s plant-based meat alternatives reached nearly $219 million last year, with even greater earnings expected as the pandemic continues to drive higher grocery sales.
