Chipotle will pay $25 million to settle foodborne illness charges
Chipotle will pay $25 million to resolve criminal charges related to foodborne illness outbreaks which occurred between 2015-2018. During that time period, over 1,100 people were sickened by E.coli, Salmonella, and Norovirus outbreaks, Food Safety News reports. While claiming the outbreaks were due to individual employees at various locations who did not follow hygiene procedures and violated stay-at-home policies, Chipotle has agreed to reevaluate its food safety audits. Federal prosecutors say this is the largest fine ever in a food safety case.
