Albertsons will lay off staff delivery drivers and replace them with contractors using third-party apps

Grocery store delivery drivers employed by the chain Albertsons and its subsidiaries will be laid off and replaced by drivers independently contracted by third-party apps like DoorDash, Uber, and Lyft, The Washington Post reports. The company made the decision in December to lay off delivery staff across the country and has been partnering with DoorDash since 2018. Many California labor advocates who pushed against Prop. 22 were outraged by the decision. According to the grocery chain, unionized delivery workers will not be laid off, and some contracts provide protection from contract worker competition and typical employee benefits like sick leave.
