This year marks a record seaweed season in Maine, partly due to pandemic-fueled demand
The pandemic has fueled a seaweed boom, and Maine farmers are reaping the benefits: This year is on track to be the largest-ever seaweed harvest in the state, clocking in at around 800,000 pounds of kelp, the Associated Press reports. That’s almost double last year’s numbers and more than six times the 2019 harvest. Once pulled from the depths, the marine delights will be processed into delicacies like “smoothie cubes” and seaweed salads.
