Girl Scouts call on its cookie bakers to address child labor issues
Girl Scouts of the USA called on the two companies that bake their iconic cookies to address any child labor abuses linked to palm oil, the Associated Press reports. Last Wednesday, comments were tweeted to AP reporters after an earlier investigation which linked Girl Scout cookies and other food brands to an estimated tens of thousands of child labor abuses. The investigation found many child laborers in Indonesia and Malaysia work long hours in hazardous conditions to help harvest palm fruits on plantations. Both of the Girl Scouts’ cookie bakeries said they were committed to sourcing sustainable palm oil, despite the reported findings.
