Rural counties reach record-setting Covid-19 infection rates for the 5th consecutive week

On Friday, October 23, rural counties reported 17,818 new Covid-19 infections. According to the Daily Yonder, these high levels of infection led to a new nationwide peak of 82,887 recorded infections in one day. Many of these rural counties lay in the red zone, a term used by the White House Coronavirus Task Force, which marks localities where the spread of Covid-19 is out of control. Red zone county rates must have at least 100 new infections per 100,000 people.
