Trader Joe’s will change branding after petition calls it racist

Trader Joe’s said it will repackage its international food products after a petition called on the grocery chain to “remove the racist branding.” About 2,400 people had signed the petition as of Monday, CBS News reports. Petitioners want the products labeled “Trader Ming’s,” “Trader José,” and “Trader Giotto’s” removed, claiming the packaging perpetuates racist stereotypes and exoticizes other cultures. The petition comes after Quaker Oats’ decision last month to remove Aunt Jemima, and the subsequent rebranding of Uncle Ben. A Trader Joe’s company spokeswoman said they expect to complete the change in packaging “very soon.”
