Krispy Kreme is giving away doughnuts to vaccine recipients—and some folks are mad about it (surprise!)

When Krispy Kreme began offering free doughnuts last week to those who’ve received the Covid-19 vaccine, critics pushed back on the promotion. Though the company has previously organized giveaways of its doughnuts for festive occasions like St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween, the latest offering drew backlash for seemingly promoting obesity and discriminating against people who choose to not get the recommended vaccines. Sure, a free doughnut a day for the rest of the year may not be a nutritionist’s dream, but most doctors point out that any and all incentives to stop the pandemic should be welcome. Krispy Kreme’s CEO Mike Tattersfield sees this as another matter of choice: “If folks don’t want to visit a doughnut shop, they don’t have to.”
