Haaland advances for Interior post

After passing a key panel today, New Mexico Democratic Rep. Deb Haaland is on her way toward a full Senate vote as she seeks the Interior Secretary spot. After a particularly contentious grilling that included senators shouting, calling her a radical, and citing oil-industry data to throw a wrench in her nomination, Haaland got the nod from the body’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee, including a lone Republican vote from Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. If confirmed, Haaland will be the first Native American to lead a cabinet agency, which includes the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
