Waffle House employees complain of layoffs, reduced pay, and no sick leave
Waffle House prides itself on staying open during all kinds of natural disasters. The breakfast chain’s commitment to keeping its doors open is so pronounced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency uses its closures as a barometer to gauge the severity of storms. During the Covid-19 pandemic, though, hundreds of Waffle House locations across the country have shuttered or reduced services. Now employees are saying the company has abandoned its “family” values by cutting shifts and scaling back pay and benefits, Eater reports. Perhaps worst of all, the chain’s workers do not have paid sick leave. “When you’re out, you’re out,” one server told Eater. “If you don’t work, you don’t make any money.”
