NYPD falsely accuses Shake Shack of poisoning milkshakes

It’s quite a trend, this. A cop (or cops) complain about a tainted order or shoddy service at a fast food establishment. The complaint proceeds to blow up on social media, before eventually being retracted. Last night, three NYPD officers claimed they were sickened by poisoned milkshakes from Shake Shack, leading to widespread outrage and condemnation. Oops, turns out it wasn’t true. Back in March, Katie Way at VICE documented how this has become an increasingly common method for police to gin up manufactured outrage and sympathy, in her article “How Stupid Do Cops Think We Are?”
