Last Thursday, President Trump issued an executive order that will pave the way to authorize offshore aquaculture—a move that drew praise from the seafood industry and criticism from environmental advocates. Right now, most U.S. fish farming takes place inland, while some shellfish, like oysters, are farmed near shorelines. The FDA initially greenlighted limited offshore aquaculture back in January. Trump’s EO now gives the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration authority to approve fish farming in the open ocean, potentially increasing risks to wildlife, marine ecosystems, and independent fishermen.
