New York City meals program is feeding seniors airline food

When the going gets tough, the tough turn to plane food. According to The New York Post, the New York City Department of Sanitation has awarded over $35 million in contracts to Gate Gourmet and Sky Chefs to prepare and distribute frozen meals to needy seniors in isolation during the pandemic. Why emergency food services are overseen by the agency better known for trash hauling and street cleaning is unclear. Why our elderly neighbors are getting served airplane food—which has a reputation for being unappetizing, unhealthy, and lacking in food safety oversight—is even more disturbing. This isn’t the first time that the city’s meal programs have been criticized for failing to adequately serve residents. In the meantime, community organizers and volunteers are stepping up to fill in some of the gaps.
