At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, companies like Amazon, Kroger, and Rite Aid offered extra pay to employees who continued to show up at work despite the risk of virus transmission. Now, apparently, the companies have decided the threat has passed—or perhaps, more cynically, they’re eyeing unemployment numbers and betting they can replace anyone who misses work. Many major retailers have already phased out bonus pay and temporary wage increases, and more are expected to do so in the near future. The Wall Street Journal has more.
