In 2017, the North Carolina state legislature passed a measure stripping farm workers of the right to bargain for voluntary union recognition as part of legal settlements with employers. Last week, a federal judge ruled that the move was unconstitutional, the Associated Press reports. Worker and labor advocates welcomed the decision, while noting that their fight is far from over: Another provision in the 2017 state farm bill prohibits workers from authorizing employers to deduct union dues from their paychecks—a provision the judge did not strike down. Worker groups have already filed an appeal of that decision.
