It’s not news that the lobster and dairy industries have suffered financially in the past few years—but you wouldn’t know that based on RNC speeches alone. This week, President Donald Trump has counted a Maine lobsterman and a Wisconsin dairy farmer among his most fervent advocates at the convention. “More than any president in my lifetime, he has acknowledged the importance of farmers and agriculture,” said one dairy farmer on Tuesday. Then, last night, a lobster harvester applauded the president for giving his industry “a voice.” But farmers and fishermen are far from unanimous in their reception to the last four years of ag policy. The dairy industry has seen high rates of bankruptcy, particularly in Wisconsin, due to bottoming out milk prices and consolidation, while lobstermen have seen sales to China, a major purchaser, plummet because of Trump’s trade war.
