Sixty thousand pounds of chicken products recalled due to potential salmonella contamination

Frozen chicken brand Serenade Foods announced a recall of over 60,000 pounds of product due to concerns about salmonella contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced on Monday. The recall affects frozen products sold across the country, including stuffed and breaded chicken, CNN reports. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 28 people have been sickened and 11 hospitalized in potential connection with the contamination. Salmonella is a common foodborne illness-causing bacteria that is often found on raw meat. While there are more than 2,500 identified strains of it, just a few are responsible for actually making people sick, explains The Guardian. Consumer advocates want to see food safety regulators develop more robust standards for monitoring and limiting these virulent strains to reduce infections in humans. Meanwhile, what can you do? Return any recalled products, and make sure to cook your chicken to 165 degrees—which will ensure that any salmonella present gets killed.
