Sesame has long existed in the realm of common-but-not-officially-designated food allergens. That all changed this week, after President Biden signed a new law designating it as the ninth major food allergy. This is a labeling law, first and foremost—by January 2023, all products containing sesame must be clearly marked as such. But there’s another significant element: The Department of Health and Human Services will now “prioritize regular reviews of promising food allergy treatments and research,” according to Laura Reiley at The Washington Post. This will surely encompass the latest guidance on food allergies: that exposure to small doses at a young age can help build immunity. This information was included in the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans for the first time, and there is broad consensus it will save lives.
