A proposed Midwestern pipeline would capture carbon dioxide from ethanol refineries and pipe it underground, Grist reported. The project, estimated to cost $2 billion and go online in 2024, is intended to minimize ethanol plants’ carbon footprint. Hypothetically, lower emissions would help the corn-based fuel compete with solar and wind energy, though some automakers are looking to ditch gasoline-powered cars altogether. Funny, we’re old enough to remember when ethanol was supposed to be the next big thing in green. Really feels like the fuel of the future shouldn’t require an exhaust pipe that spews carbon dioxide right back into earth’s crust.
