Restaurants that repeatedly flouted Covid-19 rules face thousands in fines—but little enforcement

In Los Angeles County, a handful of restaurants have racked up tens of thousands in fines over repeated violations of public health rules during the pandemic. Some are continuing business as usual, reports The Los Angeles Times. Case in point: Novo Cafe, an Italian restaurant, has continued to operate, despite receiving more than 90 citations totaling more than $86,000 in fines, and losing its alcohol and public health permits. The dilemma has highlighted the difficulty of actually enforcing Covid-19 regulations, a responsibility that often falls on the shoulders of already overburdened local public health agencies. —Jessica Fu
