Online grocery shopping has surged in the pandemic, but it’s leaving behind millions of Americans on SNAP

Online grocery shopping has surged during the pandemic, but it’s leaving behind millions of Americans who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In Massachusetts, for instance, shoppers can use their SNAP benefits online only at Amazon and Walmart. But both services pose barriers in higher prices, delivery limitations, and technological inaccessibility, CNN Business reports. Additionally, not all grocers are able to establish online ordering systems. Illinois Senators Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth proposed a bill in July that would allocate $100 million to support and develop online portals for SNAP recipients and establish a program that would help smaller retailers create direct-to-consumer opportunities.
