To date, 30 states have passed legislation protecting businesses from being sued by employees and customers who say they’ve contracted Covid-19 on-site. Yet the anticipated slew of lawsuits has not materialized, Pew Charitable Trusts’ Stateline blog reports. Just 52 suits have been filed by nonemployees claiming they contracted Covid-19 at a place of business; workers have filed about 200 additional civil complaints. It’s possible the laws have had a chilling effect, but one theory is that employees are filing workers’ compensation claims instead of lawsuits. As Stateline points out, it’s also just really, really difficult to prove exactly where a person contracted the virus.
