A new Los Angeles city ordinance will forbid the placement of self-service cutlery and napkin stations in restaurants, and forbid restaurants from providing disposable utensils except when requested. The initiative is an attempt to reduce waste and, thus, municipal cleaning costs, while also helping restaurants save money. According to The Los Angeles Times, restaurants that already practice by-request utensils have saved between $3,000 and $21,000 per year. If this policy catches on elsewhere, we can definitely say goodbye to all those memes about receiving three sets of cutlery when only ordering for oneself.
