Try these DIY seasoning recipes if you don’t want to buy Goya products

People are calling for a boycott of Goya—a brand of ingredients popular in Hispanic cuisine, including canned beans and seasoning blends—after the company’s CEO praised President Donald Trump during a White House appearance last week. On Twitter, eaters are now crowdsourcing Goya alternatives, from lesser-known competing brands and DIY spice blends. The backlash is rooted in a sense of betrayal, Seattle chef Eric Rivera points out in a Washington Post report. Trump has made numerous xenophobic comments targeting Latinos and his administration has enacted policies that split up families at the U.S.-Mexico border, invoked fear among Latino communities, and attempted to deport Dreamers. Meanwhile, the Goya executive is defending himself against the criticism, comparing it to suppression of speech.
