As the school year ends, anti-hunger advocates worry that children won’t have adequate access to food this summer unless government regulations loosen for school meal programs. Food insecurity has doubled in the U.S. since April, and tripled in households with children, according to a study by Northwestern’s Institute for Policy Research. Feeding sites are at risk of losing federal funding, as the emergency federal government coronavirus waivers expire on June 30. In response, the School Nutrition Association has urged USDA to extend the waiver that allows free school meals through the 2020-2021 school year, according to The Washington Post.
