The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has urged the public not to drink, cook, or serve the branded alkaline water, Real Water, which has been linked to an outbreak of acute nonviral hepatitis in Nevada. The products may also have been shipped to Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Utah. Real Water claims to have 9.0 pH levels, “making it the only drinking water on the market that can maintain a stable negative ionization,” supposedly key to chemical balance in the body. Whatever the company says, none of these claims have been evaluated by FDA, The Takeout reported. Health officials are still investigating to see if other products may be connected to the outbreak. Nevertheless, FDA has said that consumption of the bottled water is the common denominator in all reported illnesses so far. The company has since acknowledged the recall and issued a statement urging retailers to pull its products from shelves and return them to distributors.
