Ahead of a pandemic fall, grocers are stockpiling Thanksgiving turkeys and herbal tea

In the early months of the pandemic, grocery stores were besieged by shoppers desperately seeking household essentials—toilet paper, most famously—and suffered shortages. Now, as the country braces for what health experts predict will be a painful fall, grocery stores are trying to avoid that same fate—but this time, it’s with food. CNN reports that grocers are already stockpiling supplies for the months ahead. Southeastern Grocers, Winn-Dixie’s parent company, bought its Thanksgiving turkeys and hams over the summer. And with cold season around the corner, United Natural Foods, or UNFI, a supplier whose main client is Whole Foods, has loaded up on herbal tea and cold remedies. Paper towel shortages, it should be noted, are still happening.
