Nine months into a pandemic that’s killed hundreds of meatpacking workers and sickened tens of thousands more, industry giant JBS is sending workers home. In response to a new wave of infections, the company removed 202 at-risk workers, including those who are 60 or older, from its Greeley, Colorado, plant, as part of a “vulnerable population” policy, according to Food Dive. While they’re home, the workers are getting full pay and benefits. Overall, the company has taken more than 5,000 people—roughly 8 percent of its American workforce—out of plants to avoid a new meltdown.
