About four months ago, the Food and Drug Administration, which oversees 80 percent of the country’s food supply, announced it would stop routine factory inspections, due to the dangers posed by Covid-19. Inspections since dropped from over 900 a month to just eight in April. Citations for unsafe conditions fell to nearly zero. That’s over now, as Law360 reports that FDA is resuming on-site enforcement next week. With the hiatus over, we should consider ourselves lucky to have avoided a killer outbreak—of the foodborne illness variety.
