Remember back around 2015 when an impressive roster of companies—McDonald’s, Walmart, Subway, Kroger, and others—promised to source 100 percent cage-free eggs by 2025? Most will have to pick up the pace to hit that deadline, Bloomberg reports. So far, just 12 of 116 companies have met the goal, though an additional 71 told advocacy group Compassion in World Farming they’ve made strides toward it. Some blamed the supply chain for their slow progress. Others shrugged and gestured toward the pandemic. Our favorite non-explanation comes from Kroger, which has increased its proportion of cage-free eggs by less than 5 percent in the last three years: “There is more work to be done,” the company told Bloomberg. —H.
