Coca-Cola terminated its longtime ties with the International Life Sciences Institute, a powerful food organization known for its pro-sugar research and policies. Its membership ended at the “global, regional and country level” as of this month, according to a statement from Coke, Bloomberg reports. ILSI has been criticized in recent years for acting as an advocacy-oriented front group for its corporate members by influencing government health and nutrition policies. Coke’s withdrawal is a major setback for the organization at a time when more health-conscious consumers are turning away from sugary beverages. Other corporations including candy makers Mars and Nestle left the organization years prior.
