President Joe Biden is calling for an expansion of paid sick leave and retroactive hazard pay for essential workers, as part of his $1.9 trillion pandemic stimulus proposal. If passed, this would close a loophole that has allowed large employers—defined as having 500 or more employees—to dodge a requirement mandating paid time off for illnesses such as Covid-19, Washington Post reports. It would also require grocery stores and supermarket chains that phased out “hero bonuses” to reimburse workers with back pay. Grocery Dive has the lowdown on that here. The administration is calling for the rapid passage of the stimulus package. Now, with the slimmest Democratic majority installed in the Senate, it just might be possible.
