Some companies are beginning to tackle one of the biggest issues of takeout: plastic waste. In November 2019, Adam Farbiarz launched DeliverZero, a startup which partners with restaurants to deliver food in reusable containers. The customer can then return the containers to the delivery person on their next order, or return them directly to the restaurants within six weeks (otherwise they’ll be charged $3.25 per container). The service is currently limited to just 15 restaurants in Brooklyn, but Farbiarz hopes to expand to 100 by the end of 2020, Quartz reports. Similarly, Dig, a quick-service chain in New York, introduced a program called Canteen last year. By paying $3 a month, customers can take reusable bowls from Dig locations and return them when they’re finished.
