The anti-diet movement is challenging long-held assumptions about weight and health

A new wave of nutritionists and dieticians are pushing back against long-standing ideas about the relationship between weight and health, reports The Wall Street Journal. For decades, American diet culture has centered primarily on weight loss through restrictions on what to eat and drink. But what if eaters could achieve their health goals without completely cutting out their favorite foods? And what if our assumptions about weight as an indicator of health are entirely misplaced? The burgeoning anti-diet movement is advocating for a different way forward—one that centers on eating what you want instead of swearing off entire categories of foods (which can lead to binging) and emphasizing other measures of health like mental well-being and sleep quality over numbers on a scale. —Jessica Fu
